The Blair Young Democrats began this year as a way to get students at Montgomery Blair High School involved in various Democratic campaigns. The goal of the Blair Young Democrats Association is to interest and involve young people in the democratic process and to organize Blair High School’s political potential. Low voter turnout rates span all ages. However, these low rates are especially profound among young voters, many of whom are still in high school. The Blair Young Democrats hope to turn around this disinterest in politics by giving students an opportunity to interact with political figures and to learn about pertinent current events.
This fall, Blair’s Young Democrats organized speaking events at Blair with Congressman Chris Van Hollen, and Van Hollen’s campaign manager Chuck Westover. Blair’s Young Democrats also organized “Blair Bands Rock for Change,” a political fundraiser and concert. Speakers included Maryland Democratic Party Chair Ike Leggett and Kerry-Edwards Maryland Campaign Chair Heather Mizeur. Hundreds of Blair students came and had a great time, and over $1500 was raised for charity!
